We celebrate our nation's declaration of independence which was made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -- very close to the Pinelands of neighboring New Jersey -- the home of native wild highbush blueberries. Visit the town of Hammonton, which is touted as the "Blueberry Capital of the world" and you will see monuments to citizen soldiers who served in the Continental Army and militias. Right outside of town in the historic village of Batsto you will see where naturally occurring iron in the ground was transformed into cannon and cannonballs for the war. 296 important Revolutionary War battles occurred in what is now called the Garden State. Blueberries gathered from the forests were an important supplement to the diet our soldiers and volunteers!
Happy Independence Day, and Happy Blueberry Month!
